A section of the Greenway Trail and North Water Street in Schultz Park in downtown Paducah will be closed to pedestrians and vehicles beginning Monday, May 18, for work related to the Riverfront Infrastructure Improvement Project also known as the BUILD Grant project. The closure is expected to last one week, weather-permitting.
A contractor for the City of Paducah, Jim Smith Contracting, will install a new river sensor for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Streamgaging Network, which monitors streamflow year-round at more than 12 thousand streamgages nationwide. The previous sensor had deteriorated and needed replacement.
During the work, the Greenway Trail and a section of North Water Street on the river side of the floodwall will be closed to pedestrians and vehicular traffic. The closure area extends from the linear parking area at the North 2nd Street floodwall opening adjacent to the transient boat dock to the floodwall openings at the Farmers’ Market parking lot and at Water Street and Jefferson Street. The linear parking area will remain open.
Please use caution and follow all traffic control devices and barricades.
The City of Paducah is in the final months of completing the BUILD Grant project. The scope of the project includes several elements: construction of a 500-foot-long excursion pier and excursion plaza, intersection improvements at the entrance to the Convention Center at 5th Street and Park Avenue, development of a multimodal pathway adjacent to the Quilt Murals, creation of a compass rose feature and enhanced park space with a terraced mound and seating near the transient dock, and the installation of new bus shelters.
The City of Paducah is using a $10.4 million BUILD grant (Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development) through the Maritime Administration along with $3.5 million in State funds to cover the majority of the project’s construction costs. Crews began mobilizing on the project on November 21, 2024, and completion is scheduled for this summer.
